film in flux

the superlative ubuweb has made a group of 37 short fluxus films from 1962-1970 available online in quicktime format. i for one am not exactly a fan of fluxus as a movement. it seems, in my far from scholarly view, that it is in fact a perfect model for what not to do as an artist. namely: claim to reject “limiting art theories” then explain your position by putting forth wordy, convoluted, and vague theories of your own. add to this one of they key components of the movement, the rejection of “pure aesthetic objectives” and what does that ultimately leave you with after the “aktions” are over? 40 years worth of words i guess.

I dunno a lot about fluxus, except for the following factoids: that they had a sizable humor component; that yoko ono is the best known of the group; and that another member is an uncle of beck, as in odelay beck, not jeff beck, and that according to an article i read somewhere about beck, as in odelay beck, not jeff beck, that he (odelay beck, not jeff beck) was thus not even the coolest member of the family. Caveat: factoids, unlike facts, are drawn from raw memory, and there is no such thing as ‘factoid checking.’ Like other sorts of oids (steroids, hemorrhoids, asteroids, mergatroids) they can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

So I actually read the link and found I’d repeated some of what is there. Check this out: a Dear John letter to the fluxus movement! http://www.fluxus.org/
By a midwesterner who joined the party about 20 years ago, and who feels the survivors are letting the movement die.
Here’s an idea for an art movement: do whatever you want, but do it in a time and place other than the here and now! Oh, wait, oh yeah, it’s called nostalgia. Why should the Society for Creative Anachronism limit itself to renaissance faires? Wouldn’t you love to see King Arthur’s Knights riding against the Confederate Army in some vacant field, fighting over who ‘owns’ fluxus now? Perhaps it will turn into a rout and all the flappers and teddy boys who came out to watch will have to run for their lives like the Washington society fops at First Manassas.
I would go as Caligula. Dibs!
